Located in the Tri-Valley area, Livermore Valley is the place to go for wine lovers, and visiting some of the best wineries here is one of the best things to do in the Pleasanton, CA area, including Livermore and Danville.

The Winemakers Studio at Wente Vineyards

Since 1883, The Winemakers Studio at Wente Vineyards has been known for its Chardonnay. All of California has benefited from their innovations in wine production.  From Thursday through Sunday, The Winemaker Studio opens its doors to visitors to give them a glimpse of the magic and work that comes with each bottle. The winery also offers a number of workshops, from wine blending and cheese pairing to wine aroma discovery.

Wente Vineyards is the oldest continuously-operated, family-owned winery in the country. It even managed to stay open during Prohibition. It remains the largest wine producer in Livermore Valley, with over 700,000 cases of wines sold annually. Reclaiming the historic vineyard acreage of Cresta Blanca Winery that went uncultivated after being sold to an outside firm, Wente Vineyards added that award-winning land to its extensive acreage, calling it “Sparkling Cellars.”

Just down Tesla Road, Concannon Vineyard is another vineyard known for its genius in wine production. Its Petite Sirah and Cabernet are superb. Introduced in 1961, Concannon Vineyard’s Petite Sirah was the first to be offered as a standalone grape varietal. Until then, it was produced for a blend wine.

Also established in 1883, Concannon Vineyard has a historic home that is to be admired with its fine wines. Enjoy the picturesque outdoor porch as you choose from an international wine list. Concannon Vineyard is the second largest in wine production in Livermore Valley, with a knowledgeable staff that can provide a tour of the estate and its array of wines.

The Steven Kent Winery

Founded in 1996, the passion of this winery’s owner was to develop a Cabernet that could rival the best in the world – and he has accomplished that goal. It is called Lineage. When you visit his rustic tasting room, open year-round, don’t forget to taste the white wines. Steven Kent’s “Lola” is a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. It is a tribute to the quality of the Bordeaux grape-growing condition in Livermore Valley.

Rubino Estates features an excellent selection of Italian wines along with their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from the grape varietals of the Livermore Valley. Ruby Hill Winery

Set in the original lands of the historic Ruby Hill Winery, the winery was reopened in 2008 with a new stone faced, tiled roof facility. Ruby Hill Winery is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery carrying on its revered tradition of fine wines, established in 1887. It offers an idyllic picture of life in Pleasanton, CA.

Located just a mile down Vineyard Avenue from its sister winery, Rubino Estates Winery, Ruby Hill Winery invites its visitors to take in the flavor of its Italian-Californian neighbor.

Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site
Danville, CA

Nestled in wine country, Eugene O’Neill’s Tao house is maintained as a national treasure by the National Parks Service. Don’t waste your time trying to find it, since it can only be reached by shuttle service from downtown Danville.  The absence of an adjoining parking helps in maintaining its original setting. If you’re in the area, you have to make the trek to this beautiful site. Eugene O’Neill’s most creative years were spent in the Tao house. This is where he finished “Long Day’s Journey into Night”.
